WCAS Support Groups and Local Interests

Lunchtime Support meets the first Friday of each month and is a support group for parents or guardians of individuals with any autism spectrum disorder. Meeting location is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Garner. Lunch and childcare are free. The meetings are open discussion. Bring whatever questions, concerns or experiences you wish to share with the group.

Father’s Group go on field trips one Saturday a month. Please join us. See the calendar for contact information and location.

Mom’s Night Out meets periodically at a local restaurant.

Parents of Adults 18 and Over Support Group meets once a month on Tuesdays at Creative Living, 1220 Nowell Rd., Raleigh. Dr. Lee Marcus is facilitator. Parents of adults with autism, as well as other interested people, are invited to attend. Contact Jeanie Timberlake for information.

Parents of Teens and Young Adults with HFA/Asperger’s is a parent support network that shares information and resources concerning teenagers and young adults with HFA/AS who are in high school or college or have recently begun employment. Please contact Robin Schiffmiller for more information.

Parents of Children with HFA/Asperger’s Syndrome meets once a month at ASNC. See the events calendar for date and time. Contact Laura Graham, Asperger's Support Group Leader, for more information.

The Sibling Support Group is for 9- to 13-year-old siblings of children with an autism spectrum disorder. The siblings meet with peers who go through the same experiences they do. Heather Allen, a licensed therapist who is currently working exclusively with families of children on the autism spectrum, will facilitate the group. Sessions include warm up activities, arts and crafts, games and peer support discussions. Adult and young adult volunteers are needed. Please contact Robin Schiffmiller to register or volunteer.

Wake County Autism Society Board Meeting meets once a month and are open to interested parents.

Parents of Teens Educational Meetings is not affiliated with WCAS but a valuable resource for parents of teenagers with an ASD. Contact Kathy Honeyman, 878-3239, for more information.

Familysupportonline.com offers a “Holland Tour Group” gathering at the Brooks Ave. Church of Christ in Raleigh. This support group brings together families of children with special needs for information sharing and support. If you are interested in participating please RSVP to Leigh Menconi, 662-4600 x 257. Respite care is available by RSVP one week before the meeting.

ASNC will host newly diagnosed informational workshops for parents or guardians of children with an autism spectrum disorder who have been recently diagnosed. Parents will learn how to advocate for their child, as well as learn about available resources. in the ASNC conference room at 505 Oberlin Road, Suite 230, Raleigh. Call Theresa Brennan or Linda Griffin, parent advocates, at 743-0204 or 1(800) 442-2762 for more information and to register.

GRACE (Greater Raleigh Autistic Children’s Enrichment) hosts family riding times at Camp Kanata. Please contact Susan Belton at (919) 556-9460 or register online. There is no fee for the day, but space is limited. Please arrive on time because they cannot start late.

Raleigh Dietary Interventions Support Group holds meetings monthly. Anyone looking for assistance with allergies, Celiac disease, or gluten-free/casein-free diet is welcome to attend. Please call Deborah Gee-Tritschler for location and further information at 387-9018.
